A collection of Russian fairy tales — the skazki — rendered into Sinhala by Dedigama V. Rodrigo. The book is printed entirely in Sinhala, so it will suit readers of the language rather than anyone looking for an English text.

The skazki are part of Russian folklore, long rooted in the country's culture and history. The tales gathered here are built around strange and magical happenings, heroic journeys, and encounters with mythical creatures. Their recurring themes are the ones that run through the tradition: good prevailing over evil, courage, cunning, and the worth of kindness and generosity.

Dedigama V. Rodrigo is the translator. The work had appeared earlier under other publishers; this Gunasena edition is issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.

Russian literature in Sinhala translation has a settled readership in Sri Lanka, and folk tales of this kind are often a child's or a young reader's first meeting with it. Readers abroad who keep up their Sinhala, or who want their children to read in the language, are the obvious audience for a copy shipped out of Colombo. M. D. Gunasena & Co. is a long-established Colombo publisher and bookseller.
