Lahugala Kitulana National Park is one of the smallest and lesser-known protected areas in Sri Lanka, situated approximately 13 kilometres from Arugam Bay in the south-eastern part of the island. Despite its modest size, the park holds considerable ecological value as a key habitat for Sri Lankan elephants, along with a number of endemic bird species. The landscape is characterised by flat terrain punctuated by rocky outcrops, and three reservoirs that sustain a rich variety of wildlife throughout the year.
Beyond elephants and birds, visitors may encounter sloth bears, axis deer, wetland birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish and freshwater turtles within the park's boundaries. The relative quietness of Lahugala Kitulana makes it particularly appealing to nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers who prefer a more unhurried experience than the island's larger parks tend to offer.
Booking through Lakpura allows entry without queuing at the gates in the early hours of the morning. A confirmed booking generates a physical ticket, which should be presented upon arrival. Citizens of SAARC member countries are eligible for a discounted entrance rate — a valid passport is required at the time of purchase to receive the reduction.
