One volume in the Great Stories series, this book gathers the life stories of six figures from the history of science: Isaac Newton, Thomas Alva Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie and Albert Einstein. Each is presented as a biography — the course of a life, told in turn.
The text is in Sinhala throughout. There is no English edition of this title and no parallel English text within it, so it will be readable only by those at home in the language. For Sinhala-speaking families abroad buying for children at home, that is usually the point; for anyone else, it is worth knowing before ordering.
It is a children's book, written for young readers and illustrated in colour. The publisher's stated purpose is straightforward enough: to put determination, creativity and persistence in front of children through the examples of people who worked at something difficult, and to encourage confidence in their own abilities. The treatment is pitched at a child's reading level rather than at a student of the history of science.
The author is Niranjan Chaminda Karunathilake. It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, the long-established Colombo publishing and bookselling house, which issues titles in Sinhala and English and has a substantial children's and educational list.
Suitable as a gift for a Sinhala-reading child, as a classroom or home library addition, or for a parent looking for short biographical reading that goes beyond storybooks without demanding much of a young reader.
