A colouring book for young children, part of a series from M. D. Gunasena & Co. built around the simple practice of filling in pictures. This one takes animals as its subject.
Each picture is presented for the child to colour, and is named in English. The intention is that colouring and naming happen together: as a child works through the pages, the animals and the English words for them become familiar alongside the practice of handling colour within a line.
It is aimed at children at the stage where colouring is itself the activity being learned — holding a pencil or crayon, choosing a colour, staying inside a shape — rather than at older children working from instruction. Parents and nursery teachers in Sri Lanka will recognise the format; M. D. Gunasena is a long-established Colombo publisher of schoolbooks and children's material, and this belongs to that side of its list.
The text is in English, which makes it usable for Sinhala- and Tamil-speaking households wanting early English vocabulary, and equally straightforward for anyone abroad buying a Sri Lankan children's book for a young child.
