Madathawalu is one of the best known traditional red rice varieties of Sri Lanka, sold here by Bowatte. It has long been grown on the island and is widely used at home for rice porridge and food for young children.
The maker suggests eating it with the bran left on, as traditional red rice is usually eaten in Sri Lanka.
How to cook
Rinse the rice a few times, then boil it or cook it in a rice cooker. Red rice with the bran on usually needs more water and a longer cooking time than polished white rice; see the label.
In the pack
One 500g pack of raw red rice.
Storage
Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
