Tolstoy's novel of Anna, a woman of charm and fine nature, and of the family life around her, set among the Russian aristocracy of an earlier age. It is a story told from within a household and a social class, and the questions it raises about marriage, reputation and feeling are the ones that have kept readers returning to Tolstoy since he wrote.
This is an English-language edition published in Sri Lanka by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a Colombo publishing house of long standing. For Sri Lankan readers meeting the Russian novel for the first time, and for anyone building a shelf of the classics in English, it is a straightforward reading copy rather than a scholarly edition — the novel itself, without apparatus.
Leo Tolstoy was a Russian novelist whose fiction centred on family, land and the moral life of the society he belonged to. Readers who come to him through this book often go on to War and Peace.
