A Grade 1 workbook for Tamil as a second national language, intended for children in Sinhala-medium schools. It follows the syllabus introduced with the education reforms of that period, which set out a new approach to teaching Tamil to Sinhala-speaking pupils, and is built as a practice companion for that first year of study.
It was compiled by Udeni Rajapakse, a teacher of Tamil at Kingswood College, Kandy, and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co.
Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note the languages: the workbook is in Sinhala and Tamil throughout, with no English. Instructions and explanatory material are given in Sinhala, as the book is written for a child whose first language is Sinhala and who is meeting Tamil script and vocabulary at the start of primary school. It will be of use to parents and teachers working with that curriculum, and to Sinhala-speaking families abroad who want their children to begin Tamil along the same lines as pupils at home.
