Question 1

Is it safe to take taxis in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Taxis are generally safe in Sri Lanka when you use reputable services. App-based taxis such as PickMe offer driver tracking and upfront fares, making them a reliable choice in cities. For intercity routes, pre-booking through a trusted operator removes the risk of inflated fares or unlicensed vehicles.

Question 2

How much does a taxi from Colombo Airport to Kandy cost?

Accepted Answer

The fare varies depending on the operator and vehicle type, but a pre-booked private transfer for this route typically runs for a fixed rate agreed before travel. Booking in advance through a DMC such as Lakpura avoids post-flight negotiation and guarantees a named driver at arrivals.

Question 3

Can I hire a driver for a full day in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, full-day driver hire is common and widely available across the island. A typical arrangement covers around 8 hours and an agreed kilometre limit. Confirm in advance whether fuel, tolls, and any driver accommodation for overnight stops are included in the quoted rate.

Question 4

What is the best taxi app in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

PickMe is the most widely used ride-hailing app in Sri Lanka and operates in Colombo and several regional towns. Uber also operates in Colombo. Both offer cashless payment and fixed upfront fares, which makes them convenient for spontaneous urban travel.

Question 5

How long does it take to drive from Colombo Airport to Ella?

Accepted Answer

The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport to Ella typically takes around five to six hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The route climbs into the hill country and includes winding mountain roads, so a driver familiar with the terrain is advisable, particularly for evening arrivals.

Question 6

Do taxi drivers in Sri Lanka speak English?

Accepted Answer

English proficiency varies considerably. Drivers working with established operators and DMCs are generally selected for their English communication skills. In rural areas or when hailing informally, basic communication may require patience or a translation app.

Question 7

Is it better to rent a car or hire a driver in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

For most international visitors, hiring a driver is more practical than self-driving. Sri Lanka's road conditions, limited rural signage, and unfamiliar traffic patterns make self-driving challenging. A driver familiar with local routes, road closures, and seasonal conditions adds genuine value beyond simply getting from A to B.
