Question 1

Where is Orchid Magu located?

Accepted Answer

Orchid Magu is a central street in Malé, the capital city of the Maldives. It runs through the main commercial and civic district of the city, close to major landmarks including the Grand Friday Mosque and the National Museum.

Question 2

Is it worth staying in Malé rather than going straight to a resort?

Accepted Answer

Spending a night in Malé gives you a very different perspective on the Maldives — one that goes beyond the resort experience. The area around Orchid Magu offers local food, markets, and cultural sites that are genuinely interesting. For travellers with an early morning transfer or a late arrival, staying in central Malé is also simply practical.

Question 3

How far is Orchid Magu from the airport?

Accepted Answer

Velana International Airport is on the island of Hulhulé, separated from Malé by a short harbour crossing of around ten minutes by ferry. From the Malé ferry terminal, Orchid Magu is typically reachable on foot in five to ten minutes, making it a convenient base for travellers in transit.

Question 4

What is the dress code for visiting the streets of Malé?

Accepted Answer

The Maldives is an Islamic nation, and modesty is expected in public areas of Malé. Shoulders and knees should be covered when walking around the city, especially near mosques. Beachwear is not appropriate outside designated resort or beach areas.

Question 5

What local food should I try near Orchid Magu?

Accepted Answer

Look for hedhikaa — traditional Maldivian short eats — at local tea shops. Bajiyaa (fish pastries) and gulha (fish-filled dough balls) are popular snacks. Tuna-based curries with rice or flatbread are the staple meal, and sweetened tea with condensed milk is the default drink at almost every café.

Question 6

Are there good guesthouses near Orchid Magu?

Accepted Answer

Central Malé has a growing number of locally run guesthouses, many within walking distance of Orchid Magu. They are generally modest in scale but comfortable, with air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. It is advisable to book in advance, particularly during the peak season from November to April.

Question 7

Can I visit the Grand Friday Mosque as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Non-Muslim visitors are generally permitted to enter the Grand Friday Mosque in Malé outside of prayer times, provided they dress modestly — women should cover their hair, and both men and women should cover arms and legs. The mosque is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the Maldives and is a short walk from Orchid Magu.
