Question 1

Where exactly is the Palace Complex in Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

The Palace Complex sits in the northern section of Polonnaruwa's main archaeological zone, within the UNESCO-designated Sacred City. It is signposted from the main entrance road and is most easily reached by bicycle or tuk-tuk from the ticket office.

Question 2

How old is the Polonnaruwa Palace Complex?

Accepted Answer

The core of the complex dates to the reign of King Parakramabahu I, who ruled from 1153 to 1186 CE. Some earlier structures may predate his reign, as Polonnaruwa served as a royal seat for several centuries before reaching its peak under Parakramabahu.

Question 3

Is the Polonnaruwa Palace Complex included in the Cultural Triangle ticket?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Palace Complex is covered by the standard Polonnaruwa entry ticket issued by the Central Cultural Fund. This single ticket also grants access to the Quadrangle, Gal Vihara, and other monuments within the archaeological zone.

Question 4

How long does it take to visit the Palace Complex?

Accepted Answer

Allowing two to three hours is reasonable if you also plan to walk the Council Chamber and Royal Bath nearby. Visitors who choose to hire a licensed guide, which is recommended for context, should budget the fuller three hours.

Question 5

Can I hire a guide at the Palace Complex?

Accepted Answer

Licensed guides are available at the main entrance to the Polonnaruwa archaeological zone and can be engaged for tours of the entire monument area, including the Palace Complex. Arranging a guide in advance through a DMC like Lakpura ensures a knowledgeable English-speaking escort.

Question 6

What is the Royal Bath (Kumara Pokuna) at Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

Kumara Pokuna, meaning 'Prince's Bath', consists of two stone-edged pools believed to have been reserved for the royal family. The hydraulic channels that once filled and drained the pools are still partially visible, illustrating the sophisticated water management systems of the Polonnaruwa period.

Question 7

Is Polonnaruwa worth visiting compared to Sigiriya?

Accepted Answer

The two sites offer very different experiences and complement each other well. Sigiriya is a single dramatic rock fortress, while Polonnaruwa spreads across a wide zone of ruins that together paint a detailed picture of a working medieval capital. Most itineraries visiting the Cultural Triangle include both.

Question 8

How do I travel from Colombo to Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

Polonnaruwa is roughly 215 kilometres from Colombo, a journey of around four hours by private car. Intercity trains and express buses also connect the two cities. Most visitors travelling with a DMC arrange private transport that allows flexible stops along the way.
