Question 1

Who is worshipped at Maha Katharagama Devalaya?

Accepted Answer

The shrine is primarily dedicated to Skanda, known in Sri Lanka as Kataragama Deviyo, a deity revered across Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The site also holds significance for Muslims and the indigenous Vedda community, making it one of the few genuinely multi-faith pilgrimage centres in South Asia.

Question 2

Can non-Hindus visit Kataragama Devalaya?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the outer areas of the complex are open to visitors of all faiths and none. Non-Hindu visitors are generally expected to dress modestly, remove shoes, and observe quietly during puja ceremonies. Entry to the inner sanctum may be restricted during active rituals.

Question 3

What is the Kataragama Festival and when does it happen?

Accepted Answer

The Kataragama Festival is an annual celebration held over roughly two weeks in July or August during the Esala full-moon period. It features nightly processions with elephants and traditional drumming, as well as remarkable acts of devotion including fire-walking. It is one of the most significant religious festivals in Sri Lanka.

Question 4

Is there an entry fee for Maha Katharagama Devalaya?

Accepted Answer

There is no standard entry fee for the shrine complex itself. Some facilities within the precinct may charge a small donation or offering fee. The nearby Kiri Vehera stupa is also free to visit.

Question 5

What is the Menik Ganga river and why is it important?

Accepted Answer

The Menik Ganga is the sacred river that flows through the Kataragama complex. Pilgrims traditionally bathe in its waters before entering the main devalaya as an act of ritual purification. The riverbank is a lively gathering point during festival season.

Question 6

How should I dress when visiting Kataragama?

Accepted Answer

Modest dress is required — shoulders and knees should be covered. Many pilgrims wear white as a mark of purity. Shoes must be removed before entering the shrine grounds, so slip-on footwear is practical. Avoid clothing with prints or logos that might be considered disrespectful.

Question 7

Can I combine a visit to Kataragama with a Yala safari?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and many travellers do exactly this. Yala National Park is roughly 40 kilometres from Kataragama, making it straightforward to combine a morning puja visit with an afternoon or early-morning game drive. Tissamaharama serves as a convenient base for both activities.
