Kataka and Kumbha Porondam

This page explains how a Kataka (Cancer) and Kumbha (Aquarius) pairing is read in Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham. It sets out the rashi-level results in both directions and explains why the two birth stars matter most.

Which rashi is being matched here?

In Sri Lankan marriage matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi). It is the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscope columns, so a person who reads as Cancer in a magazine may have a different chandra rashi.

Kataka (Cancer) is ruled by the Moon, and Kumbha (Aquarius) is ruled by Saturn. The rashi-level checks look at three things: the count from one sign to the other, the relationship between the two rashi lords, and vashya. Results can differ depending on whether the bride or the groom holds each sign, so both directions are shown below.

What does the rashi count show in each direction?

When the bride is Kataka and the groom is Kumbha, the count from the bride's sign to the groom's is 8. In Sinhala porondam the rashi item is partly obtained. In Tamil porutham the rasi item is not obtained.

When the bride is Kumbha and the groom is Kataka, the count from the bride's sign to the groom's is 6. In this direction the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala and the Tamil systems.

The two directions give different results because the count is always taken from the bride's sign to the groom's. Kataka and Kumbha form a 6 and 8 relationship, and the two traditions weigh each side of it slightly differently.

Are the Moon and Saturn friendly lords, and what about vashya?

The rashi lords here are the Moon (Kataka) and Saturn (Kumbha). In the calculator's planetary friendship table, the relationship is neutral on one side and hostile on the other. That means the two lords are not counted as friends.

As a result, rashyadhipathi in the Sinhala system and rasi adhipathi in the Tamil system are both not obtained. This applies whichever partner holds which sign.

Vashya looks at a traditional sense of mutual attraction or influence between signs. It is also not obtained for this pair in both directions and in both systems.

These are sign-level readings only. They describe broad patterns and are not the full picture of a match.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each rashi contains parts of several nakshatras, which are the birth stars. Together, the two signs allow 81 star-quarter combinations in each direction, and most porondam and porutham items are decided at the star level.

On the Tamil 10-point count, none of these combinations reach 8 of 10. About 56% fall into the weaker range, and only about 4% involve a rajju clash.

On the Sinhala side, leaving aside the weekday item, about 79% of combinations pass when the bride is Kataka. The figure is about 40% when the bride is Kumbha.
