Question 1

When did Islam first come to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Arab Muslim traders began settling along Sri Lanka's coasts from around the 7th century CE, attracted by the island's strategic position on Indian Ocean spice-trade routes. Over generations their descendants became the community now known as Sri Lankan Moors, one of the island's principal ethnic and religious groups.

Question 2

What percentage of Sri Lanka's population is Muslim?

Accepted Answer

Muslims account for roughly 10 percent of Sri Lanka's population, making Islam the third-largest religion on the island after Buddhism and Hinduism. The community includes Sri Lankan Moors, Indian Moors, and Malays, each with distinct historical origins.

Question 3

Where is the oldest mosque in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Kechimalai Mosque in Beruwala, on the southwestern coast, is widely regarded as one of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka and among the oldest in South Asia. Beruwala itself is considered one of the earliest Arab trading settlements on the island.

Question 4

Is halal food easy to find in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Halal food is readily available across Sri Lanka, not just in the predominantly Muslim eastern province. Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Negombo, and Nuwara Eliya all have numerous halal-certified restaurants, and many hotels offer halal menu options. The island's large Muslim population ensures this infrastructure is well established.

Question 5

What is the Red Mosque in Colombo?

Accepted Answer

The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque in the Pettah district of Colombo, popularly called the Red Mosque, is one of Sri Lanka's most photographed religious buildings. Built in 1909, its striking red-and-white striped facade makes it instantly recognisable. It remains an active place of worship and a landmark on most Colombo heritage tours.

Question 6

Are Eid festivals public holidays in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Both Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha are gazetted public holidays in Sri Lanka, reflecting the formal recognition of the Muslim community in national civic life. During these festivals, Muslim neighbourhoods throughout the island hold communal prayers, family gatherings, and charitable activities.

Question 7

What is the difference between Sri Lankan Moors and Malays?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lankan Moors are descended from Arab and South Indian Muslim traders who settled on the island from the 7th century onward and are the largest Muslim community. Sri Lankan Malays are a smaller, distinct group descended from soldiers and labourers brought by the Dutch East India Company from the Malay Archipelago in the 17th and 18th centuries, and they retain elements of Malay language and cultural practice alongside their Islamic faith.

Question 8

Can I visit mosques in Sri Lanka as a non-Muslim tourist?

Accepted Answer

Many of Sri Lanka's historic mosques welcome respectful visitors outside of prayer times. Modest dress — covered shoulders and knees for both men and women — is required, and shoes must be removed at the entrance. It is courteous to ask permission before entering and to avoid photography during prayer times.
