What is Flacourtia indica used for in Ayurveda?

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic practice, Flacourtia indica is used to support liver and digestive health, address skin conditions, and manage symptoms of diarrhoea and dysentery. Preparations are made from the root bark, leaves, and fruit depending on the condition being treated. As with all traditional remedies, use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Is Flacourtia indica fruit edible?

Yes. The ripe fruit of Flacourtia indica is edible and has a tart, slightly sweet flavour. It is eaten fresh and is also used in jams, preserves, and chutneys in parts of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Unripe fruit is quite astringent and is less commonly eaten raw.

Where does Flacourtia indica grow in Sri Lanka?

The plant is most common in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climate zones, particularly in the North Central, North Western, and Eastern provinces. It grows along forest margins, scrubland, and as a boundary shrub around cultivated land. It is well adapted to poor soils and drought conditions.

What are the other common names for Flacourtia indica?

Flacourtia indica is known by several common names, including Governor's Plum, Ramontchi, and Indian Plum. In Sri Lanka it is recognised under Sinhala vernacular names used by traditional practitioners and rural communities.

Does Flacourtia indica have any proven medicinal properties?

Laboratory research has identified antioxidant, antimicrobial, and potential hepatoprotective compounds in the plant, broadly supporting some of its traditional uses. However, clinical trials in humans are limited, so it remains primarily a traditional medicine plant rather than a clinically validated pharmaceutical ingredient.

How is Flacourtia indica different from other medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Unlike many Sri Lankan medicinal trees that grow only in rainforest or montane habitats, Flacourtia indica is adapted to drier, more open environments and is commonly found in home gardens and village boundaries. Its combination of fruit, medicine, and use as a natural hedge makes it unusually versatile among dry-zone medicinal plants.
