Accepted Answer

Ficus benjamina is widely regarded as one of the more beginner-friendly bonsai subjects because it tolerates pruning well, develops an attractive trunk relatively quickly, and adapts to indoor conditions with moderate humidity and bright indirect light. It is one of the most cultivated bonsai species in Sri Lanka and globally.

Question 5

What wildlife does Ficus benjamina support?

Accepted Answer

As a keystone fig species, Ficus benjamina provides fruit that sustains birds, fruit bats, and other wildlife across different seasons. Question 6

Where can I see large Ficus benjamina trees in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Large specimens are found throughout the island's lowland areas, particularly near ancient temples, village centres, and in parks. The wet zone and intermediate zone provide ideal growing conditions, and the tree is also common in urban settings such as Colombo's parks and along heritage town streetscapes.

Question 7

How is Ficus benjamina different from the sacred Bo tree?

Accepted Answer

Both are members of the genus Ficus, but Ficus religiosa (the Bo or Bodhi tree) has distinctly heart-shaped leaves with a long drip-tip and holds deep religious significance in Buddhism. Ficus benjamina has smaller, elliptical, glossy leaves with a pointed tip and is primarily valued for its ornamental, ecological, and medicinal properties rather than its spiritual associations.
