Question 1

Where exactly is Dedduwa Lake in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Dedduwa Lake is located near Balapitiya in the Galle District, on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast. It lies roughly 90 kilometres south of Colombo along the A2 coastal highway, and is closely linked to the Madu Ganga estuarine system.

Question 2

Is Dedduwa Lake the same as Madu Ganga?

Accepted Answer

They are connected but distinct. Dedduwa Lake is an inland lake that forms part of the broader waterway network that includes Madu Ganga. Madu Ganga is more developed as a tourist destination; Dedduwa tends to be quieter and less visited, offering a more low-key nature experience.

Question 3

Can you see crocodiles at Dedduwa Lake?

Accepted Answer

Mugger crocodiles inhabit the waterways around Dedduwa Lake, though sightings are not guaranteed. Early-morning boat trips along quieter channels give the best chance of spotting them basking on exposed banks or vegetation.

Question 4

What birds can I see at Dedduwa Lake?

Accepted Answer

The lake supports purple herons, grey herons, little egrets, little cormorants, common and white-throated kingfishers, bee-eaters, and brahminy kites. Between October and March, migratory waders also move through the area, adding to the species count.

Question 5

How long does a Dedduwa Lake boat safari take?

Accepted Answer

A typical boat circuit of the lake and its connecting mangrove channels takes between one and two hours. Longer trips that extend into the Madu Ganga system can last three to four hours and cover considerably more ground.

Question 6

Is Dedduwa Lake worth visiting if I have already done Madu Ganga?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the two experiences complement rather than duplicate each other. Madu Ganga offers more structured stops and tourism infrastructure, while Dedduwa Lake is calmer and less busy. If you value quiet over convenience, Dedduwa is worth the detour.

Question 7

What is the best time of year to visit Dedduwa Lake?

Accepted Answer

December through April is the optimal window, coinciding with the dry season on Sri Lanka's southwest coast. Mornings during this period are clear, wildlife is active, and boat conditions are calm. Early morning visits — ideally just after sunrise — are recommended year-round.
