Question 1

What is Cryptocoryne bogneri?

Accepted Answer

Cryptocoryne bogneri is a small aquatic plant endemic to Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Araceae. It grows in slow-moving lowland streams and river margins in the island's wet zone, and is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Is Cryptocoryne bogneri found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Cryptocoryne bogneri is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it does not occur naturally anywhere else in the world. Several other Cryptocoryne species are also native to the island, making Sri Lanka an important centre of diversity for this genus.

Question 3

Can I keep Cryptocoryne bogneri in an aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is a popular species in the planted aquarium hobby due to its compact size and relative hardiness once established. Tissue-culture propagated specimens are widely available from specialist aquatic plant nurseries, which avoids pressure on wild populations.

Question 4

What does Cryptocoryne bogneri look like?

Accepted Answer

It typically forms a rosette of narrow, lanceolate leaves ranging from mid-green to brownish-green, depending on light and water conditions. Like other Cryptocoryne species, it can produce a spathe under optimal conditions, though this is rarely observed in cultivation.

Question 5

What traditional uses does Cryptocoryne bogneri have in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is included in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants. Various Cryptocoryne species have featured in regional ethnobotanical records, though specific documented uses for C. bogneri are limited and should be understood within the context of traditional knowledge rather than modern clinical evidence.

Question 6

Where can I see Cryptocoryne bogneri in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant inhabits lowland wet-zone streams, particularly in areas with clear, shallow, slow-moving water and a soft substrate. Botanical gardens such as Peradeniya near Kandy also maintain collections of native aquatic and medicinal plants where such species may be encountered.

Question 7

Is Cryptocoryne bogneri endangered?

Accepted Answer

Its restricted natural range makes it vulnerable to habitat loss from wetland drainage, agricultural runoff, and sedimentation. While not currently listed under the highest global threat categories, conservation botanists consider narrow-range endemic aquatic plants like C. bogneri to be at ongoing risk from lowland habitat degradation in Sri Lanka.
