Question 1

Is it safe to self-drive in Sri Lanka as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Self-drive is legally possible with an international driving permit endorsed in Sri Lanka, but road conditions, local driving conventions, and inconsistent signage make it challenging for first-time visitors. Most travellers find hiring a professional local driver to be a safer and more comfortable option, particularly for long-distance or mountain routes.

Question 2

How long does it take to drive from Colombo to Kandy?

Accepted Answer

The journey from Colombo to Kandy typically takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic and the route taken. The Central Expressway has reduced travel time significantly compared to the old A1 highway, though the final section into Kandy remains on a winding mountain road.

Question 3

What is the best way to get from Colombo airport to southern Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Southern Expressway (E01) connects Colombo to Galle and the southern coast and is the fastest road option. A private transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport to Galle typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on Colombo traffic. Booking a pre-arranged transfer avoids the uncertainty of finding a vehicle on arrival.

Question 4

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to visit Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all safari-track access within Sri Lanka's national parks requires a park-approved 4WD jeep operated by a licensed driver. Your own transfer vehicle cannot be used on park tracks. Jeep arrangements are typically made through your tour operator or at the park entrance.

Question 5

Are roads in Sri Lanka accessible year-round?

Accepted Answer

The main A-grade highways and expressways are generally accessible year-round. Mountain roads and some rural routes can be temporarily disrupted by landslides or flooding during peak monsoon periods. Checking current conditions locally before travel on smaller roads is advisable during June–August and November–January.

Question 6

How far in advance should I book train tickets for the Kandy-to-Ella route?

Accepted Answer

Reserved-class seats and observation car tickets for the scenic hill-country train are popular and can sell out weeks in advance, especially during high season (December–March and July–August). Booking several weeks ahead through an authorised agent or the Sri Lanka Railways reservation system is strongly recommended.

Question 7

What vehicle size do I need for a family of five with luggage?

Accepted Answer

A family of five with standard touring luggage will typically require a mid-size van such as a Toyota KDH. If the itinerary includes national park safaris, a 4WD vehicle with roof access or removable sides will also be needed for those specific legs, usually arranged separately at the park.

Question 8

Can Lakpura arrange transport for guests with reduced mobility?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura can accommodate guests with reduced mobility on a case-by-case basis. This typically involves selecting vehicles with easier boarding, planning routes that avoid steep stairways or unpaved paths, and briefing drivers accordingly. Guests should inform Lakpura of any specific requirements at the time of booking.
