Question 1

Is Cerbera manghas poisonous to humans?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All parts of the plant, especially the seed kernel, contain cardiac glycosides including cerberin, which can disrupt heart rhythm and prove fatal if ingested. The fruit's red appearance can be mistaken for edible tropical fruit, so caution is essential near coastal habitats where the tree grows.

Question 2

What is Cerbera manghas called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

The tree is sometimes referred to as 'Gon Kaduru' in Sinhala, reflecting its poisonous nature — 'kaduru' being a term associated with toxic plants in the local vernacular. Regional names can vary across different parts of Sri Lanka.

Question 3

Where can I see Cerbera manghas in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is most commonly seen along Sri Lanka's southwest coast, particularly around mangrove estuaries and tidal waterways. The Madu Ganga wetland area near Balapitiya is one of the more accessible locations where guided boat tours pass stands of the species.

Question 4

What are the medicinal uses of Cerbera manghas in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Within Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, the plant has been documented for use in treating skin conditions and certain parasitic infections, always under expert supervision. Because of its high toxicity, it is never used in self-medication and requires preparation by qualified practitioners.

Question 5

How do you identify Cerbera manghas fruit?

Accepted Answer

The fruit is oval, roughly the size of a small mango, and turns from green to bright red or purple-red when ripe. It has a smooth surface and a single large seed inside surrounded by fibrous flesh. Despite its attractive appearance, it should not be handled or tasted.

Question 6

Is Cerbera manghas the same as the 'suicide tree'?

Accepted Answer

No. Cerbera manghas is sometimes confused with its close relative Cerbera odollam, which is more commonly known as the 'suicide tree' or 'pong-pong' and carries a higher concentration of toxins. Both belong to the same genus and share similar physical traits, but they are distinct species with different habitat preferences.

Question 7

Does Cerbera manghas have any research applications?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Scientists have studied cerberin and related compounds for potential use as natural biopesticides, particularly as piscicides and insecticides. This research interest reflects a broader global effort to identify plant-derived alternatives to synthetic chemical pest control agents.
