It also has traditional applications for minor wounds and insect stings.

Question 2

Where does Barleria lupulina grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found throughout Sri Lanka's low-country and mid-country zones, growing along roadsides, hedgerows, and in cultivated gardens. It is commonly planted as a boundary hedge in rural homesteads, particularly in the North Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces.

Question 3

Is Barleria lupulina safe for external use?

Accepted Answer

External use such as leaf poultices is generally considered safe within traditional Ayurvedic practice, though some individuals may experience skin sensitivity. Internal use should only be undertaken under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, and the plant is not recommended for self-prescribed internal consumption.

Question 5

What bioactive compounds are found in Barleria lupulina?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, and phenolic acids in the plant. These compounds are associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity in laboratory research, supporting many of its traditional uses.

Question 6

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic wellness centres in Kandy, Colombo, and the Southern Province often feature herb gardens with guided tours. Several resorts and retreat centres offer structured Ayurvedic programmes that include medicinal plant identification walks and consultations with resident practitioners.
