Question 1

What is Bambusa glaucescens used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and broader Asian ayurvedic traditions, Bambusa glaucescens is associated with several therapeutic uses. Young shoots are consumed for their cooling and digestive properties, leaves are used in preparations targeting fever and respiratory complaints, and the silica-rich tabasheer found inside mature culms is referenced in classical Ayurveda as a tonic ingredient. Traditional uses should always be verified with a qualified practitioner before application.

Question 2

Is Bambusa glaucescens native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bambusa glaucescens is believed to originate in southern China, but it has been cultivated and naturalised across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka, for many centuries. It is now so thoroughly integrated into home gardens, temple grounds, and agricultural land that it functions as part of the everyday botanical landscape of the island.

Question 3

What is tabasheer and which bamboo produces it?

Accepted Answer

Tabasheer, also called bamboo silica or vanshalochan in Sanskrit, is a chalky white substance that forms inside the nodes of mature bamboo culms. Several bamboo species produce it, including members of the Bambusa genus. It is valued in Ayurveda as a mineral-rich tonic, particularly in formulations addressing respiratory conditions and general vitality.

Question 4

Is hedge bamboo invasive in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bambusa glaucescens is a clumping bamboo, meaning it grows in contained, expanding clumps rather than spreading via aggressive underground rhizomes as running bamboos do. This makes it a manageable and relatively non-invasive choice for hedging and garden use in Sri Lanka's tropical climate.

Question 5

What does the LK94006010 code mean for Bambusa glaucescens?

Accepted Answer

The code LK94006010 is a catalogue reference assigned to Bambusa glaucescens within Sri Lanka's national inventory of ayurvedic medicinal plants. This classification system helps document, preserve, and share knowledge about the island's traditional plant-based medicine heritage in a systematic way.

Question 6

Can bamboo shoots from Bambusa glaucescens be eaten?

Accepted Answer

Yes, young bamboo shoots are edible and are consumed across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, they can be incorporated into curries and stir-fries. Shoots are typically harvested when young and tender, before the culm hardens, and are often boiled before use to reduce any natural bitterness or toxicity.

Question 7

Where can I learn about Sri Lankan medicinal plants during a visit?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, near Kandy, offer one of the best curated introductions to Sri Lanka's flora, including labelled medicinal plant sections. Village home garden walks in the cultural and rural zones of the island also provide informal but authentic encounters with plants like Bambusa glaucescens in their everyday agricultural context.
