The capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, Jaffna is located on its own Peninsula surrounded by a massive lagoon and beautiful beaches. Made of limestone and located at sea level, you will notice many palmyrah groves in the area. There are many notable buildings in Jaffna while some have been destroyed by the Portuguese colonials and some during the 30 year old civil war. The Dutch Fort, many homes, churches, and civil buildings which were built during the Dutch Era, the Nallur Kandaswamy temple and the Saraswathy mahal library are to name a few. The fishing industry helps most of the livelihood while the locals depend on the lagoon waters and the surrounding lands as sources of income.
