Question 1

What is Cyclea peltata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic and traditional medicine, Cyclea peltata is primarily used for its anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and digestive properties. Preparations are typically made from the plant's roots as decoctions or powders. Traditional practitioners include it in formulations targeting fever, inflammation, and mild digestive complaints.

Question 2

Where does Cyclea peltata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cyclea peltata grows mainly in moist lowland and mid-elevation forests in Sri Lanka's wet zone and parts of the intermediate zone. It favours shaded, humid environments with well-drained, organically rich soils, and is commonly found at the edges of rainforests and in secondary vegetation.

Question 3

What family does Cyclea peltata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cyclea peltata belongs to the Menispermaceae family, a group of climbing and twining plants distributed across tropical regions. Other medicinally significant genera in the same family include Tinospora, Stephania, and Cissampelos, all of which appear in South Asian traditional medicine systems.

Question 4

What active compounds are found in Cyclea peltata?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains isoquinoline alkaloids, with tetrandrine and related compounds being among the most studied. These alkaloids have shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. Research into potential antitumour properties is also ongoing, though clinical evidence in humans is limited.

Question 5

Is Cyclea peltata safe to use without medical guidance?

Accepted Answer

Like any medicinal herb, Cyclea peltata should be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic or healthcare practitioner. Alkaloids in the plant can have significant pharmacological effects, and appropriate dosage and preparation method matter. Self-medicating with plant-based preparations carries risks, especially for people with existing health conditions or those taking other medications.

Question 6

How is Cyclea peltata different from Cyclea barbata?

Accepted Answer

Cyclea peltata and Cyclea barbata are distinct species within the same genus, though they share a similar growth form and some overlapping traditional uses. Cyclea barbata is more commonly associated with Southeast Asian folk medicine, while Cyclea peltata has stronger documentation in South Asian, including Sri Lankan, Ayurvedic traditions. The alkaloid profiles of the two species differ in their exact composition.

Question 7

Can tourists visit places in Sri Lanka associated with Ayurvedic plant heritage?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's wet-zone forests, particularly the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and several botanical gardens, offer opportunities to encounter medicinal plants in their natural habitat. Wellness tourism centred on Ayurvedic treatments is widely available across the island, and some cultural tours include visits to traditional herbal gardens or practitioner communities.
