Uga Prava Hotel

Tangalle, Sri Lanka

Uga Prava is a seven-suite Uga Escapes hotel at Unakuruwa, just west of Tangalle on the south coast, where every suite faces the ocean and the pool meets the sea. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word for coral, and the hotel sits in about 2.5 acres (1 hectare) of tropical gardens by the shore, a few minutes from the surf at Unakuruwa beach.

Which room should I book?

All seven suites look out to sea and have a balcony, air conditioning and ceiling fans, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen television with a sound system, a minibar, a safe and an espresso machine with Sri Lankan tea, and in-suite dining is available from morning until late evening. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.

  • Hermit Suite – two secluded suites of about 67 to 76 square metres, named after the hermit crabs found along this shore. Each has a super-king-size bed, a walk-in shower that opens onto the private balcony, his-and-hers vanities and a jacuzzi on the balcony looking over the ocean. They are designed for couples, but can take up to three adults, or two adults and a child.
  • Horizon Suite – three suites of about 68 square metres on three different levels, each with a super-king-size bed, an end-to-end view of the Indian Ocean, a private balcony for dining, and a bathroom with both a bathtub and a walk-in shower. Up to three adults can share, or two adults with up to two children.
  • Coral Suite (Family Unit) – two family suites of about 59 to 69 square metres with a super-king-size bed and two single beds, two separate bathrooms (the main one with a bathtub) and a balcony for dining and lounging. They are booked for two to four adults.

Couples who want privacy and a jacuzzi should choose a Hermit Suite, those who want the widest sea view a Horizon Suite, and families a Coral Suite.

What is the food like?

The restaurant serves ocean-inspired Sri Lankan cooking in an airy, semi-outdoor dining room as well as outdoors, and menus can be tailored to your tastes.

What is there to do at the hotel?

The infinity pool is aligned with the sea, and the spa uses local herbal treatments, with private yoga, meditation, mindfulness and sound-healing sessions on request. The hotel also arranges surfing at Unakuruwa, kayaking and lagoon safaris, pottery, cycling and cultural excursions.

What is nearby?

Unakuruwa beach is about 800 metres away, and the wide bay of Mawella Beach about 4 kilometres. The Hummanaya Blow Hole is about 8 kilometres from the hotel, and the town of Tangalle is close by. Further afield are the turtle nesting beach at Rekawa and the ancient rock temple of Mulkirigala, each about 24 kilometres away, and the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary at about 34 kilometres. Seasonal whale and dolphin watching trips leave from Mirissa, further west along the coast.

How do I get from the airport to Uga Prava?

The hotel puts the journey from Colombo at four to five hours, most of it on the Southern Expressway, and from Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, you should allow a little longer. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Uga Prava, which takes you all the way to the door.

Who is Uga Prava best suited to?

It suits couples and small families who want a quiet, design-led hideaway by the sea with only a handful of other guests, and a pool and spa to come back to after days on the south coast beaches.
