Barberyn Sands Ayurveda Resort is a small Ayurveda retreat on Paradise Island in Bentota, the narrow spit of land between the Bentota River and the Indian Ocean. The property, previously known as Hotel Paradise Island, was fully renovated and has been run as Barberyn Sands by Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts since December 2017. Stays here centre on Ayurveda treatment guided by the resort's own Ayurveda physicians, with vegetarian meals, daily yoga and a quiet garden setting.
The resort sits on Paradise Island, Bentota, on the south-west coast, with the river on one side and the ocean on the other, surrounded by gardens. Bentota town is a short walk or a short ferry ride away, and from there the coast road and railway run north to Colombo and south towards Galle.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from Bentota by road, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours on the expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Barberyn Sands Ayurveda Resort.
There are 25 renovated rooms, all at ground level, in low-rise cabanas of two rooms each. The categories are River Front, Garden and Beach Front rooms, and each has a double bed, an attached bathroom, mosquito nets, a standing fan, a telephone and a patio, with air conditioning available in some rooms on request.
Barberyn Sands is an Ayurveda resort rather than a beach hotel with a spa, and treatment is part of every stay. Its Ayurveda medical centre is staffed by consulting physicians who set each guest's programme, which can include herbal decoctions, synchronised oil massage, head and face applications and herbal and steam baths. Daily yoga classes, meditation sessions, Ayurveda lectures, cooking demonstrations and cultural evenings fill out the days.
Meals are served in a single dining room: breakfast, lunch and dinner, with fresh juice by the pool in the morning and afternoon tea. The kitchen is vegetarian and serves no fish, meat, seafood or alcohol, and a physician is present at meals to advise on what to choose. There is a swimming pool with a poolside terrace, a shrine room, a small shop, free Wi-Fi and a laundry service, and the resort runs several complimentary excursions each week that guests are welcome to join.
