Question 1

What is Tithonia diversifolia used for medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Tithonia diversifolia is used in traditional and ayurvedic medicine primarily for its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and antipyretic properties. Leaf preparations — typically as poultices or decoctions — are applied to skin conditions, minor wounds, and fever. Preliminary scientific research supports several of these traditional uses, though clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Question 2

Is Tithonia diversifolia native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Tithonia diversifolia is native to Central America but has naturalised widely across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka. It grows readily in disturbed soils, roadsides, and field margins, particularly in the wet and intermediate climatic zones of the island, and has been incorporated into local ayurvedic and folk medicine traditions over time.

Question 3

What is the common name for Tithonia diversifolia?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most widely known as tree marigold or Mexican sunflower, owing to its large, bright yellow-orange flower heads that resemble sunflowers. In Sri Lanka it may be referred to by local vernacular names used within traditional herbal communities.

Question 4

What bioactive compounds are found in Tithonia diversifolia?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains sesquiterpene lactones (notably tagitinin C), flavonoids, and phenolic acids. These compounds are associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies, which lends scientific weight to many of its traditional medicinal applications.

Question 5

Can Tithonia diversifolia be used as a fertiliser?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The plant is widely recognised as an effective green manure because its biomass is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Smallholder farmers in Sri Lanka and across tropical Asia incorporate chopped leaves into the soil before planting to improve fertility organically.

Question 6

Is Tithonia diversifolia safe for internal use?

Accepted Answer

Internal use of Tithonia diversifolia preparations should only be undertaken under the guidance of a qualified ayurvedic or medical practitioner. The plant's sesquiterpene lactone content can cause adverse reactions in some individuals, particularly those sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family. It should not be used as a substitute for prescribed medical treatment.

Question 7

Where can I see Tithonia diversifolia growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is common along roadsides, forest edges, and agricultural borders throughout Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, including areas near the hill country and the southern lowlands. It is most conspicuous when in flower, typically between October and February, when its vivid yellow-orange blooms appear in abundance.
