Question 1

Where exactly is Shasthrawela in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Shasthrawela is a rural locality in Sri Lanka's interior, associated with the dry-zone agricultural heartland of the North Central region. It is most practically reached by private vehicle, and is often visited in combination with nearby heritage sites such as Polonnaruwa.

Question 2

What is there to do in Shasthrawela?

Accepted Answer

Shasthrawela offers an experience centred on rural Sri Lankan life — paddy-field walks, observation of traditional dry-zone agriculture, local temple visits, and encounters with working village communities. It suits travellers interested in cultural immersion rather than organised attractions.

Question 3

What is the best time of year to visit Shasthrawela?

Accepted Answer

The dry season from May to September is the most comfortable for travel in the dry zone, with clear conditions and manageable temperatures in the morning hours. The Maha growing season from around November onwards brings lush paddy fields but wetter weather.

Question 4

How far is Shasthrawela from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

The North Central interior, where Shasthrawela is located, is typically around 200 kilometres or more from Colombo by road, making the journey around four to five hours. A private vehicle is the most practical option, allowing stopovers at cultural sites along the route.

Question 5

Can Shasthrawela be combined with other Sri Lanka attractions?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The area sits within range of Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, and Wilpattu National Park, making it a natural addition to an itinerary focused on the Cultural Triangle or the dry-zone interior. Randenigala Dam and Tambuttegama are also accessible nearby.

Question 6

Is Shasthrawela safe for tourists to visit?

Accepted Answer

Rural Sri Lanka is generally safe and welcoming to visitors. As with any off-the-beaten-path destination, having a local guide or driver familiar with the area is advisable, both for navigation and for facilitating respectful engagement with the community.

Question 7

What wildlife can I see around Shasthrawela?

Accepted Answer

The dry-zone landscape around the village supports a variety of birdlife, particularly near water bodies — kingfishers, egrets, painted storks, and raptors are commonly spotted. Small mammals and reptiles typical of the Sri Lankan scrub jungle may also be encountered in the surrounding countryside.
