Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, the bark, leaves, flowers, and roots of Pterospermum suberifolium are used in preparations for inflammatory skin conditions, wounds, respiratory complaints, and joint pain. It is typically incorporated into compound formulations rather than used as a single herb. Any therapeutic application should be overseen by a qualified practitioner.

Question 3

What does Pterospermum suberifolium look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a deciduous tree that can reach around fifteen metres in height. The seeds have papery wings for wind dispersal.

Question 4

Is Pterospermum suberifolium the same as Muchukunda?

Accepted Answer

In Indian ayurvedic literature, Pterospermum suberifolium is commonly identified with the plant known as Muchukunda or Karnikara. The same species is referenced in Sri Lankan ayurvedic texts, though regional naming conventions can vary. Consulting a qualified practitioner or botanist is advisable when sourcing the correct plant.

Question 5

What plant family does Pterospermum suberifolium belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Malvaceae. It was previously classified under Sterculiaceae before that family was subsumed into Malvaceae in modern botanical classification. The genus Pterospermum contains several species distributed across South and Southeast Asia.

Question 6

Is Pterospermum suberifolium endangered in Sri Lanka?

The species is not currently listed among Sri Lanka's most threatened plants, but habitat loss and wild harvesting for medicinal use can affect local populations. Cultivation in ayurvedic gardens and research institutes helps reduce pressure on wild stocks, and sustainable harvesting guidelines are in place.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like this during a Sri Lanka tour?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several ayurvedic hospitals, research institutes, and herbal gardens across Sri Lanka maintain living collections of medicinal trees including Pterospermum suberifolium. These are often open to visitors and can be included as part of a cultural or wellness-focused itinerary.
