Question 1

What is Mundulea sericea used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Mundulea sericea is used in traditional Ayurvedic and Sinhala medicine for its antiparasitic, insecticidal, and anti-inflammatory properties. The roots, bark, leaves, and seeds all have recorded medicinal applications. Because the plant contains toxic compounds, it must be properly processed by a qualified practitioner before any internal use.

Question 2

Is Mundulea sericea native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Mundulea sericea is native to a broad range spanning tropical Asia and Africa, and it is well established in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones. It grows naturally in scrubland and open forest, particularly across the Northern, North Central, and Eastern provinces.

Question 3

Why is Mundulea sericea called the fish-poison bush?

Accepted Answer

The common name fish-poison bush refers to a traditional practice of crushing the seeds and using the toxic extract to stun fish in small waterways, making them easier to collect. This property is linked to rotenone-like compounds found in the plant's seeds and roots.

Question 4

What chemical compounds are found in Mundulea sericea?

Accepted Answer

The plant is rich in rotenoids, particularly rotenone, along with isoflavonoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. These compounds account for its insecticidal and ichthyotoxic properties and have attracted interest from researchers studying antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory applications.

Question 5

Is Mundulea sericea safe to use at home?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains compounds that are toxic without proper Ayurvedic processing. It should never be self-administered internally without guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic physician. External applications in traditional medicine are also typically prepared under professional supervision.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants while travelling?

Accepted Answer

Herbal gardens attached to Ayurvedic hospitals, spice and herb farms, and guided nature walks in forested areas offer good opportunities to encounter species like Mundulea sericea. Many wellness retreats in the hill country and dry zone incorporate ethnobotanical education as part of their programmes.

Question 7

Is Mundulea sericea the same as cork bush?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Mundulea sericea is commonly referred to as cork bush due to the distinctive corky texture of its bark. It is also called fish-poison bush and occasionally corkwood. These common names refer to the same Fabaceae shrub found across tropical Asia and Africa.
