Question 1

What family does Hopea jucunda belong to?

Accepted Answer

Hopea jucunda belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, a family of large tropical trees found across South and Southeast Asia. This family is notable for its ecological importance in rainforest ecosystems and for the commercial timber value of many of its members.

Question 2

Is Hopea jucunda endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Hopea jucunda is an endemic species, meaning it is found naturally only in Sri Lanka. Its natural range is confined to the island's lowland wet zone forests in the southwestern region.

Question 3

How is Hopea jucunda used in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Resins from Hopea species have broader historical uses across Asia as incense and in traditional medicine.

Question 4

Is Hopea jucunda endangered or threatened?

Accepted Answer

Hopea jucunda is considered threatened due to deforestation and habitat loss in Sri Lanka's lowland wet zone. As an endemic species with a restricted range, it is especially vulnerable to the ongoing loss of the rainforest ecosystems it depends on.

Question 5

Where can I see endemic Sri Lankan trees like Hopea jucunda?

Accepted Answer

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is the most significant remaining tract of lowland rainforest where endemic dipterocarps can be observed. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and other protected forest reserves such as Kanneliya also support endemic plant species.

Notable examples include Acacia chundra, Pongamia pinnata, and Syzygium aromaticum (clove), all of which appear in classical Ayurvedic formulations and have been used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine for centuries.

Question 7

Who documents and conserves medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer
