Question 1

How many trains stop at Galoya Junction Station per day?

Accepted Answer

Around 14 trains call at Galoya Junction on a typical operating day. The exact number can vary by day of the week, as some services run on selected days only. Always verify the current timetable with Sri Lanka Railways or by calling the station directly on 027-3279375.

Question 2

Which railway line does Galoya Junction Station serve?

Accepted Answer

Galoya Junction is on the Batticaloa Line of Sri Lanka Railways. This line branches from the Main Line at Maho and runs east through Habarana, Polonnaruwa, and Galoya before terminating at Batticaloa on the east coast.

Question 3

How far is Galoya Junction from Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

Galoya Junction lies in the Polonnaruwa District, east of Polonnaruwa town. The two points are connected by both rail and road, though exact distances can vary by route. Travellers typically find the road journey quicker for onward connections to Polonnaruwa's archaeological sites.

Question 4

Can I visit Gal Oya National Park from Galoya Junction Station?

Accepted Answer

The station's name reflects its proximity to the Gal Oya region. However, the national park entrance is not within walking distance of the station, so you will need to arrange road transport onward. It is advisable to organise a vehicle in advance, especially if arriving on an early or late train.

Question 5

What is the best way to travel from Colombo to Galoya Junction by train?

Accepted Answer

From Colombo Fort or Maradana, board a northbound service to Maho, then continue on a Batticaloa Line train eastward to Galoya Junction. The full journey can take many hours depending on service type. Checking the Sri Lanka Railways timetable in advance and booking seats on longer express services is recommended.

Question 6

Is Galoya Junction Station suitable for tourists or mainly used by locals?

Accepted Answer

The station is primarily a local and regional halt rather than a tourist-focused stop. That said, independent travellers visiting Gal Oya National Park, Polonnaruwa, or the wider Eastern Province do use it. It offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-track rail experience with little tourist infrastructure.

What province is Galoya Junction Railway Station located in?

Accepted Answer

The station is located in the Polonnaruwa District, which falls within Sri Lanka's North Central Province. The surrounding area is characteristic dry-zone landscape, featuring ancient irrigation tanks, paddy fields, and sparse jungle.
