Question 1

What is Ficus drupacea var. pubescens used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition, various parts of Ficus drupacea — including the bark, latex, and leaves — have been used in formulations addressing skin conditions, wounds, and digestive complaints. The variety pubescens is catalogued among Sri Lanka's recognised medicinal plants. Clinical evidence for specific therapeutic claims remains limited, and professional guidance is recommended before any medicinal use.

Question 2

Where can I find Ficus drupacea var. pubescens in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

This fig variety grows across Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-elevation forests, particularly in the dry and intermediate zones. It is found along forest margins, riverbanks, and within protected areas such as Wilpattu and Udawalawe national parks. It also tolerates secondary and disturbed habitats, making it more widespread than many specialist species.

Question 3

How is Ficus drupacea var. pubescens different from other fig trees?

Accepted Answer

The variety is distinguished from the standard Ficus drupacea form by the fine hairs (pubescence) on the undersides of its leaves and along younger stems. While this is a subtle morphological difference, it is botanically significant enough to merit separate classification. Both forms belong to the family Moraceae and share broadly similar ecological roles.

Question 4

Is Ficus drupacea var. pubescens native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this fig variety is part of Sri Lanka's native flora and is documented in the country's botanical and ayurvedic records. The species Ficus drupacea has a wider range across South and Southeast Asia, but the pubescens variety has been specifically catalogued within the Sri Lankan medicinal plant tradition.

Question 5

What animals eat the fruit of Ficus drupacea?

Accepted Answer

Like most fig species, Ficus drupacea produces small fruits that are eaten by a range of frugivores including birds, bats, primates, and reptiles. These animals play an important role in dispersing the seeds across forest areas. This relationship makes fig trees — including this variety — ecologically important as keystone species in tropical Sri Lankan forests.

Question 6

Can tourists see medicinal plants like Ficus drupacea on a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, guided botanical walks and visits to ayurvedic gardens offer opportunities to encounter native medicinal plants including fig species. Many eco-lodges and nature reserves in Sri Lanka include plant identification as part of their guided programmes. Rural communities with traditional herbal knowledge are often the best source of practical information about species like Ficus drupacea var. pubescens.

Question 7

Is Ficus drupacea var. pubescens an endangered plant?

Accepted Answer

This variety does not appear on major international threatened species lists and is considered relatively adaptable due to its tolerance of secondary habitats. However, ongoing lowland deforestation in Sri Lanka reduces habitat quality for many native plant species. Conservation of Sri Lanka's forest reserves indirectly supports populations of this and related medicinal plants.
