Question 1

What is Doona nervosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Doona nervosa is recorded in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue primarily for the resin it produces, known locally as dummala. This resin has been traditionally applied to wounds and skin conditions, burned as ritual incense, and used in veterinary folk medicine. It also has historical significance as a waterproofing material for wooden boats.

Question 2

Where does Doona nervosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows naturally in Sri Lanka's wet-zone lowland and sub-montane forests, where annual rainfall is high and soils are rich. It is most likely to be found in protected areas such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. It belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family, which is characteristic of tropical Asian rainforests.

Question 3

Is Doona nervosa endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Doona nervosa is considered endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is found naturally in very limited range outside the island. Like many wet-zone forest trees, its populations are concentrated in protected forest reserves, where habitat loss has reduced its overall extent.

Question 4

What is dummala resin and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

Dummala is an oleo-resin produced by several Doona species, including Doona nervosa. It has been used historically to waterproof boat hulls, as a topical remedy in traditional medicine, and as incense in Buddhist and Hindu rituals. Its fragrant smoke is a familiar element of temple ceremonies across Sri Lanka.

Question 5

Can I see Doona nervosa trees while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Visitors interested in tropical botany can encounter Doona nervosa on guided walks in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, where experienced naturalist guides can identify canopy trees and explain their traditional uses. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy is another accessible venue for viewing a wide range of native Sri Lankan plant species.

Question 6

Is Doona nervosa a threatened tree species?

Accepted Answer

Dipterocarps as a family are ecologically sensitive and slow to regenerate outside intact forest, and Doona nervosa faces ongoing pressure from historical deforestation in Sri Lanka's wet zone. Protected areas such as Sinharaja provide some refuge, but the species remains a subject of conservation concern within assessments of Sri Lanka's endemic tree flora.

Question 7

What family does Doona nervosa belong to?

Accepted Answer

Doona nervosa belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, a group of tall tropical trees that dominate the canopy of many South and Southeast Asian rainforests. Members of this family are known for their winged fruits, valuable timber, and the resinous substances they produce, several of which have traditional medicinal and industrial applications.
