Question 1

What is the national flower of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The national flower of Sri Lanka is Dendrobium maccarthiae, an endemic orchid found in the island's montane forests. It was chosen for its cultural significance and natural beauty. The species produces pale lilac to rosy purple flowers and is also recognised in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic plant catalogues.

Question 2

Is Dendrobium maccarthiae endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Dendrobium maccarthiae is entirely endemic to Sri Lanka and does not grow wild anywhere else in the world. It is found primarily in the wet-zone montane forests of the central highlands. Its restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and over-collection.

Question 3

Where can I see Dendrobium maccarthiae when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintain curated orchid collections that typically include Dendrobium maccarthiae. Guided forest walks in wet-zone habitats such as the Knuckles range or Sinharaja foothills also offer a chance to encounter the species. Flowering generally occurs between January and April.

Question 4

What are the medicinal uses of Dendrobium maccarthiae?

Accepted Answer

The species is listed in Sri Lanka's catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, and parts of the plant have traditionally been used in tonic and rejuvenating formulations. However, clinical scientific evidence for specific health claims is still limited. Visitors interested in Sri Lankan Ayurveda should consult trained practitioners rather than relying solely on traditional plant documentation.

Question 5

Is it legal to collect Dendrobium maccarthiae from the wild in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, collecting wild orchids from Sri Lankan forests is illegal under national flora protection laws. The species is also listed under CITES, which restricts international trade in wild-collected specimens. Visitors should observe and photograph the plant without disturbing it.

Question 6

What habitat does Dendrobium maccarthiae prefer?

Accepted Answer

It is an epiphytic orchid that grows on the trunks and branches of trees in humid montane forests, typically between 900 m and 1,500 m elevation. It requires high humidity and good air circulation, making undisturbed forest canopy essential to its survival. Deforestation and habitat fragmentation are its primary threats.

Question 7

When does Dendrobium maccarthiae flower?

Accepted Answer

Flowering typically occurs between January and April, though the exact timing can vary depending on local rainfall and altitude. The flowers are pale lilac to rosy purple with a deeper lip and carry a faint fragrance. Visiting botanical gardens in Peradeniya during this window offers the most reliable opportunity to see blooms.
