Question 1

What is Cyperus pangorei used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic tradition, Cyperus pangorei is valued primarily for its diuretic, cooling, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its rhizomes and stems are used in preparations for urinary complaints, fever reduction, and some digestive conditions. Traditional external applications for inflammatory skin concerns are also recorded.

Question 2

Where does Cyperus pangorei grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in moist, low-lying habitats such as marshes, riverbanks, and the margins of paddy fields. It is most common in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, particularly in the coastal low country and areas near inland water bodies. It tolerates waterlogged soils and thrives in tropical lowland conditions.

Question 3

Is Cyperus pangorei the same as Nagaramustaka in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Several Cyperus species — including Cyperus rotundus and Cyperus pangorei — are associated with the Ayurvedic category of Musta or Nagaramustaka in classical texts. However, these are distinct botanical species with overlapping but not identical properties. Practitioners and researchers typically distinguish between them when formulating treatments.

Question 4

What part of the Cyperus pangorei plant is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The rhizomes and the fibrous stems are the primary plant parts used in traditional medicinal preparations. Rhizome-based pastes or decoctions are most commonly referenced in Ayurvedic applications, while the stems are better known for their use in traditional weaving and craft.

Question 5

Is Cyperus pangorei the same plant used for mat weaving?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cyperus pangorei is the same species used in traditional mat weaving, particularly well known in South Indian craft traditions such as the Pattamadai mats of Tamil Nadu. In Sri Lanka, related sedge grasses have also been used for weaving domestic items in rural communities, though industrial alternatives have reduced the practice.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic plants when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many Ayurvedic wellness retreats, herbal garden estates, and cultural heritage sites across Sri Lanka offer guided introductions to the island's medicinal plant traditions. Nature reserves such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve also provide ecological context for the plant diversity underpinning Ayurvedic practice. Some Ayurvedic hospitals and clinics welcome visitors for educational tours.

Question 7

What bioactive compounds are found in Cyperus pangorei?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies on Cyperus pangorei and closely related species have identified flavonoids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and alkaloids. Essential oils from the rhizomes of related species contain sesquiterpene compounds. Formal clinical research specifically on Cyperus pangorei remains limited, though laboratory studies suggest antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.
