Question 1

What is cold-pressed coconut oil?

Accepted Answer

Cold-pressed coconut oil is extracted from coconut flesh using mechanical pressure at low temperatures, without chemical solvents or significant external heat. This preserves the oil's natural fatty acids, aroma, and nutrients better than conventional refining. It is distinct from refined (RBD) coconut oil, which is bleached and deodorised.

Question 2

Is cold-pressed coconut oil the same as virgin coconut oil?

Accepted Answer

Not always. "Virgin" refers to the quality of the starting material and the absence of refining, while "cold-pressed" refers specifically to the extraction method. Most virgin coconut oils are cold-pressed, but some use centrifuge or wet-milling instead. A product labelled both virgin and cold-pressed has been minimally processed from fresh or lightly dried coconut flesh.

Question 3

Can I cook with cold-pressed coconut oil?

Accepted Answer

Yes, cold-pressed coconut oil is suitable for moderate-heat cooking such as sautéing, stir-frying, and baking. Its smoke point is typically around 175–200 °C depending on the grade, which covers most everyday cooking tasks. For very high-heat deep frying, refined coconut oil with its higher smoke point may be more practical.

Question 4

Why does cold-pressed coconut oil go solid?

Accepted Answer

Coconut oil has a high saturated-fat content, which causes it to solidify at temperatures below roughly 24 °C. This is completely normal and does not indicate spoilage or poor quality. Simply place the sealed jar in warm water for a few minutes to liquefy it before use.

Question 5

Is Sri Lankan cold-pressed coconut oil organic?

Accepted Answer

Not automatically. Some Sri Lankan producers hold certified organic status under national or international schemes, while others use conventional growing and processing practices. Look for a recognised organic certification mark on the label — such as USDA Organic or an EU organic logo — if certified organic status matters to you.

Question 6

What is the difference between cold-pressed and centrifuged coconut oil?

Accepted Answer

Cold-pressed oil is extracted by mechanically pressing dried or fresh coconut flesh. Centrifuged oil is made by spinning fresh coconut milk at high speed to separate the oil from water without heat. Centrifuged oil is often considered the most delicate of all coconut oil types, with a very light aroma, and is typically used in premium cosmetic applications.

Question 7

How long does cold-pressed coconut oil last?

Accepted Answer

Properly stored cold-pressed coconut oil typically has a shelf life of 18–24 months from production. Once opened, it is best used within 6–12 months for optimal flavour and freshness. Store it away from direct light and heat in a sealed glass or dark HDPE container.

Question 8

Can cold-pressed coconut oil be used on skin and hair?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is widely used as a natural moisturiser for skin and as a conditioning treatment for hair. Lauric acid, the dominant fatty acid in coconut oil, is believed to penetrate the hair shaft and support the skin barrier. For cosmetic use, cold-pressed or virgin varieties are generally preferred over refined oils.
