Question 1

What is Citrus medica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Citrus medica is used primarily for digestive complaints including nausea, flatulence, and indigestion. It also appears in formulations for respiratory conditions and liver support. Topical applications of the rind or juice have traditionally been used for skin inflammation.

Question 2

Is citron the same as lemon or lime?

Accepted Answer

No — Citrus medica (citron) is a distinct species and is actually one of the three original citrus fruits from which lemons, limes, and many other varieties were later derived through hybridisation. Citron is larger, has a very thick rind, and contains much less juice than a lemon.

Question 3

Does Citrus medica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Citrus medica grows in Sri Lanka's tropical and subtropical conditions, particularly in home gardens and agricultural land across the mid-country and low-country regions. It is cultivated for both culinary use and as an ingredient in traditional Ayurvedic preparations.

Question 4

What are the active compounds in Citrus medica?

Accepted Answer

The peel of Citrus medica is rich in essential oils dominated by limonene, along with flavonoids such as hesperidin and diosmin, and coumarins. These compounds have been studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, providing a scientific basis for many traditional uses.

Question 5

Can you eat Citrus medica fruit?

Accepted Answer

The flesh of citron is very sour and is rarely eaten raw. The thick peel is the most useful part: it is candied, made into preserves and chutneys, or used for its essential oil. In Sri Lanka, the rind is sometimes combined with spices to prepare condiments with both culinary and digestive benefits.

Question 6

Is Citrus medica officially recognised in Sri Lankan medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Citrus medica is formally catalogued within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant inventory, maintained by the country's Department of Ayurveda. This recognition reflects the plant's longstanding role in the island's traditional healing practices.

Question 7

What is the difference between citron and Buddha's Hand?

Accepted Answer
