Question 3

What type of temple is Benthara Galpatha Viharaya?

Accepted Answer

It is a rock temple — known in Sinhala as a gal viharaya — where a natural rock outcrop forms the structural foundation and sacred backdrop of the complex. Question 4

Can I visit Benthara Galpatha Viharaya without a guide?

Accepted Answer

Independent visits are possible, and the temple environment is navigable without specialist knowledge. However, a local guide or a driver familiar with the area can significantly enrich the experience by explaining the iconography of the Buddha images, the significance of the stupa, and the history of the specific site.

Question 5

What should I wear when visiting a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Visitors should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees out of respect for religious custom. White clothing is particularly associated with Buddhist observance in Sri Lanka. Shoes must be removed before entering shrine rooms or stepping onto sacred paved areas.

Question 6

How does Benthara Galpatha Viharaya compare to more famous rock temples like Dambulla?

Accepted Answer
