What is Averrhoa bilimbi called in Sri Lanka?

In Sri Lanka, Averrhoa bilimbi is most commonly called 'bilin' in Sinhala. It is a small tropical tree known for its intensely sour cylindrical fruits, which grow directly from the trunk and main branches. The plant is also sometimes referred to as bilimbi or cucumber tree in English.

What are the medicinal uses of bilimbi leaves?

Bilimbi leaves are used in Ayurvedic medicine primarily for skin conditions, including acne and inflammatory rashes, where a paste or poultice of fresh leaves is applied topically. Leaf decoctions are also used in traditional practice to help manage fever and as an antimicrobial preparation. Research has identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in leaf extracts, supporting some of these traditional applications.

Is bilimbi fruit safe to eat?

For most healthy adults, bilimbi fruit is safe to eat in moderate quantities as part of a regular diet. However, it contains a notably high concentration of oxalic acid, which means individuals with kidney stones, renal disease, or related conditions should consume it with caution or avoid it altogether. It is most commonly eaten cooked or pickled rather than in large amounts raw.

How is bilimbi used in Sri Lankan cooking?

Bilimbi is used primarily as a souring agent in Sri Lankan cuisine, functioning similarly to tamarind or lime. It is added whole or sliced to fish curries, chutneys, and pickles (achcharu). In coastal communities it is particularly valued in coconut-based seafood dishes, where its sharp acidity balances rich gravies.

Where does bilimbi grow in Sri Lanka?

Bilimbi trees grow across Sri Lanka's wet zone, particularly in home gardens in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces. The tree prefers humid, well-drained conditions and partial shade, and it fruits almost year-round in Sri Lanka's tropical climate. It is rarely found cultivated commercially but is a common fixture in village and suburban gardens.

Is Averrhoa bilimbi the same as starfruit?

Averrhoa bilimbi and starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) are close relatives in the same genus and family, but they are different species. Starfruit has a distinctive star-shaped cross-section and is less sour, making it more commonly eaten fresh. Bilimbi fruits are cylindrical, much more acidic, and are rarely eaten raw without preparation.

Does Averrhoa bilimbi help with blood pressure or diabetes?

In traditional Ayurvedic practice, bilimbi preparations — particularly from the fruit — are used to support management of hypertension and blood sugar levels. Some preliminary laboratory studies have noted relevant biological activity in extracts. However, clinical evidence in humans is limited, and bilimbi should not be used as a substitute for medically prescribed treatment without consulting a qualified healthcare provider.
