Question 1

What is Apium graveolens used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Apium graveolens seeds (known as ajmoda) are primarily used to stimulate digestion, relieve flatulence, and reduce joint discomfort associated with Vata imbalances. They are also used as a mild diuretic and to support respiratory health. The seeds appear in both simple preparations and compound Ayurvedic formulations.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala or local name for Apium graveolens?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Apium graveolens is sometimes referred to by its Sanskrit-derived name ajmoda, which is used across South Asian Ayurvedic traditions. The plant is not widely cultivated as a food crop in Sri Lanka, so a distinct colloquial Sinhala name is not in common everyday use.

Question 3

Is Apium graveolens the same as celery?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Apium graveolens is the botanical name for celery. The variety most familiar as a vegetable is Apium graveolens var. dulce, while Ayurvedic medicine typically uses the wild-type variety (var. graveolens) and focuses on the seeds rather than the stalks. Both share the same species name but differ in cultivation purpose and medicinal emphasis.

Question 4

Is Apium graveolens safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Classical Ayurvedic literature advises against therapeutic use of Apium graveolens seeds during pregnancy, as they have been historically considered to have uterine-stimulating properties. Consuming celery stalks as a normal part of a balanced diet is generally regarded as safe, but concentrated seed preparations should be avoided without medical guidance.

Question 5

What active compounds are found in Apium graveolens seeds?

Accepted Answer

The seeds contain a volatile essential oil rich in limonene, selinene, and phthalides, along with flavonoids such as apigenin and luteolin, coumarins, and phenolic acids. Phthalides have attracted particular research interest. These compounds collectively contribute to the plant's aromatic character and its traditional medicinal properties.

Question 6

How is Apium graveolens prepared for medicinal use in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practitioners typically prescribe ajmoda as a powdered preparation (churna) taken with warm water, as a water decoction (kwatha), or as part of compound tablet formulations. Seed oil is also used topically. Home remedies using whole or crushed seeds steeped in warm water are also common in traditional household practice.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Ayurvedic plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official pharmacopoeia and oversees registered Ayurvedic hospitals and herbal gardens across the island. Visitors can explore dedicated botanical gardens, particularly in the Kandy region and Southern Province, where medicinal plants including those in the official catalogue are grown and documented.
