Question 1

What is Annona cherimola used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Annona cherimola is used in ayurvedic medicine for a range of purposes depending on the plant part. Seeds have antiparasitic applications but must be used carefully under professional guidance.

Question 2

Is cherimoya grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Annona cherimola is cultivated in Sri Lanka, particularly in cooler highland areas where temperatures and rainfall support its growth. Home gardens and small cultivation plots in the mid-country and up-country zones are the most common settings for the plant on the island.

Question 3

Is Annona cherimola the same as soursop?

Accepted Answer

No, Annona cherimola (cherimoya) and Annona muricata (soursop) are related but distinct species within the Annonaceae family. Cherimoya typically has a smoother skin and a sweeter, creamier flavour, while soursop has a spikier exterior and a more tart taste. Both are used in traditional medicine across tropical regions.

Question 4

Are the seeds of Annona cherimola safe to eat?

Accepted Answer

The seeds of Annona cherimola are not safe for general consumption. They contain toxic alkaloids and acetogenins that can be harmful if ingested in significant quantities. The seeds should be removed before eating the fruit, and any medicinal use of seed preparations should only be undertaken under the supervision of a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 5

What nutrients does cherimoya fruit contain?

Accepted Answer

Cherimoya fruit is a source of vitamin C, B vitamins (including B6 and folate), potassium, and dietary fibre. The creamy white flesh also provides natural sugars and small amounts of protein. These nutritional qualities support its standing as a health-promoting food in both traditional and contemporary dietary contexts.

Question 6

Is Annona cherimola recognised in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Annona cherimola is documented in the official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda. Its inclusion reflects a formal recognition of the plant's therapeutic applications within the country's traditional medicine framework.
