What is Allium cepa cv. group Cepa?

Allium cepa cv. group Cepa is the botanical classification for the common bulbing onion — the familiar round bulb used in cooking worldwide. In Sri Lanka, it appears in the official catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants and is cultivated primarily as a red-bulb variety known locally as loku lunu.

How is the common onion used in Sri Lankan Ayurveda?

Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition uses onion preparations as carminatives to relieve digestive discomfort, as expectorants in cough remedies (typically combined with honey), and in topical poultices for minor inflammation. The outer dry scales, raw juice, and warmed bulb flesh are all used in different preparations.

What compounds in onion are relevant to its medicinal use?

The main bioactive compounds include organosulfur compounds such as alliin, and flavonoids such as quercetin, which is found in high concentrations in the dry outer layers. These compounds have attracted scientific study for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Sri Lankan red onion varieties tend to be particularly rich in quercetin.

Where are onions grown in Sri Lanka?

Domestic onion cultivation is concentrated in the dry and intermediate zones, particularly around Matale, Dambulla, and parts of the North Central Province. The growing season generally runs from around September to February, using irrigation during the dry period to reduce crop disease pressure.

What does the Sri Lanka Department of Ayurveda medicinal plant catalog include?

The catalog documents plants — both native and naturalised introduced species — recognised within Sri Lanka's formal ayurvedic system. It serves practitioners, herbal medicine manufacturers, and regulatory bodies as a reference for plant identification and quality standards. Allium cepa is listed due to its long-established use in local traditional medicine.

Is it safe to use onion as a home remedy in Sri Lanka?

In culinary amounts, onion is considered safe for most people. Concentrated medicinal preparations may cause stomach irritation and could interact with anticoagulant medications at high doses. Anyone using onion therapeutically, rather than as a food, should seek guidance from a qualified ayurvedic physician or medical doctor.

How is Allium cepa different from the small shallot used in Sri Lankan cooking?

The small shallot commonly used in Sri Lankan cooking belongs to Allium cepa cv. group Aggregatum — a related but distinct cultivar group that produces clusters of smaller, elongated bulbs. Allium cepa cv. group Cepa refers specifically to the larger, single-bulb common onion. Both appear in local culinary and traditional medicine contexts.
