Freedom Lodge is a small family-run guesthouse on Saranankara Road in Kandy, Sri Lanka's historic hill capital. Kandy Lake is a leisurely 10-minute stroll away, the town centre is about a 20-minute walk, and Kandy Railway Station is 1.1 km from the lodge.
The lodge is about 114 km by road from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic, and Kandy town can be crowded in the peak season. Regular express trains run between Colombo Fort and Kandy, and intercity buses run often. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Freedom Lodge.
There are three simple, spotless rooms, each with a fan, freshly changed linen, a mosquito net and an attached bathroom with hot water. The upstairs rooms cost slightly more because they have balconies for a quiet cup of tea; monkeys sometimes visit, so keep the balcony doors closed.
Home-cooked meals can be requested, and the traditional rice and curries are the highlight. Breakfast mixes local and Western dishes, served at a communal dining table where you can meet guests from other parts of the world. The owners are on hand with advice on local sights and help with whatever you need.
Kandy Lake is close enough for an evening boat ride, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth is not far beyond it. Other places to visit in Kandy include the Kandy Museum, the British Garrison Cemetery and the Hanthane Tea Factory, and the town's busy streets are lined with shops and cafes.
