A village blacksmith's workshop is a mix of tradition, hard work and craftsmanship. On this experience you step into the forge and watch iron being worked the traditional way, by fire, hammer and anvil.

Inside the forge

  • Heat and fire: coal is burned in the forge while air is pumped in with a blower to keep the fire roaring.
  • Reading the colour: as the iron heats it turns from black to cherry red, bright orange and finally a glowing yellowish-white. The blacksmith judges the working temperature by these colours alone.
  • Hammer and anvil: the glowing iron is placed on the anvil and struck again and again. Knowing exactly where to strike, and how hard, makes all the difference.
  • Giving it shape: see how farm tools such as sickles, knives and axes are formed with the hammer-and-anvil technique, and try the traditional tools yourself under the blacksmith's guidance.
