About this experience
Set off from Mount Lavinia in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and travel to Udawalawe National Park — a journey of roughly three hours that brings you to one of Sri Lanka's finest birdwatching destinations. Board your jeep at the park gates and head into the open grasslands and scrub forest where over 200 bird species have been recorded. Your guide scans the tree lines and reservoir edges, helping you identify residents such as the Sri Lanka junglefowl, painted stork, crested serpent eagle, and a host of waterbirds that gather near the tank.
The private safari lasts around nine hours in total, with refreshments provided to keep you going between sightings. Children aged five and above are welcome, making this a practical family outing as well as a dedicated birder's excursion. Beyond the birds, the park's elephant population regularly crosses the tracks, so keep your binoculars handy throughout. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Mount Lavinia are included; meals, tips, and personal expenses are not.
