▶️The Legend of Devol Deviyo

According to local folklore, Devol Deviyo and his six brothers arrived on a raft and landed on the shores of Seenigama with the blessing of Goddess Pattini. Over the centuries, the shrine became one of Sri Lanka’s most important Devalayas, surviving destruction during the Portuguese period and continuing as a place of faith and devotion.

▶️The Mysterious Island Shrine

What makes Seenigama truly unique is its offshore shrine, known as Seenigama Muhudu Devalaya. Due to coastal erosion, part of the original temple now stands on a small rocky island just offshore. Visitors reach this sacred site by boat, adding to the mystical atmosphere surrounding the temple.

▶️Ancient Rituals and Traditional Beliefs

Seenigama is renowned for its centuries-old rituals seeking justice and protection. Devotees visit the island shrine to pray for favorable outcomes, resolve disputes, recover lost belongings, or seek divine intervention. Traditional ceremonies include grinding five spices on a granite stone and breaking coconuts as part of sacred offerings.

▶️A Place of Faith, Mystery and Devotion

The island shrine also contains two sacred image houses and a small freshwater well, considered extraordinary given its location surrounded by seawater. Pilgrims from across Sri Lanka continue to visit this unique sanctuary, preserving traditions that have been practiced for generations.

▶️One of Sri Lanka’s Most Unique Religious Sites

Seenigama Muhudu Devalaya offers a rare combination of history, mythology, spirituality, and stunning coastal scenery. Whether you're interested in Sri Lanka’s folklore, ancient traditions, or hidden cultural landmarks, this remarkable sea shrine provides an unforgettable experience unlike anywhere else on the island.
