▶️Anuradhapura – The Sacred Ancient Capital of Sri Lanka

For more than 1,300 years, Anuradhapura stood at the heart of Sri Lankan civilization. Kings ruled from this magnificent ancient capital, Buddhist monks studied and taught within vast monasteries, and generations of craftsmen created monuments that continue to inspire visitors today. Located around 200 km north of Colombo, Anuradhapura was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and remains one of the most sacred Buddhist cities in the world.

▶️Atamasthana – The Eight Sacred Places

The arrival of Buddhism during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa transformed Anuradhapura forever. Sacred relics, monasteries, stupas, and places associated with important Buddhist traditions gradually formed a sacred landscape known as the Atamasthana – the Eight Places of Veneration.

▶️Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi – A Living Link to the Buddha

Among Anuradhapura’s sacred treasures, none is more deeply revered than the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. In 288 BCE, a sapling from the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya, beneath which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment, was brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta Theri, daughter of Emperor Ashoka and sister of Arahat Mahinda Thera.

▶️Ruwanwelisaya – The Great White Stupa

Rising magnificently above the sacred city, Ruwanwelisaya was commissioned by King Dutugamunu during the 2nd century BCE. Revered as one of Sri Lanka’s holiest stupas, it is traditionally believed to enshrine an important collection of relics associated with the Buddha. Its enormous white dome and famous rows of elephant sculptures make it one of Anuradhapura’s most recognizable monuments.

▶️More Than Eight Sacred Monuments

The Atamasthana represent much more than individual temples and stupas. Together, they reveal a civilization that combined Buddhist faith, scholarship, architecture, art, and engineering on an extraordinary scale. Beyond them, Anuradhapura contains countless additional treasures, including Isurumuniya, ancient moonstones, bathing ponds, monasteries, and archaeological remains hidden among the trees.
