Bakers Bend is a stunning and unique viewpoint located on the upper side of Nonpareil Estate, near Belihuloya. This horse-shoe shaped bend lies at the 23rd curve of Nonpareil Estate Road, which connects Belihuloya to Nagarak Banglow. Visitors must obtain permission from Nonpareil Estate to access the site.
The bend is named after British Governor Samuel Baker, who played a key role in developing Nuwara Eliya. Legend has it that while traveling through this area, Baker’s horse slipped and fell off the cliff. Though the Governor survived, he commemorated his loyal companion by designing the bend in a horse-shoe shape.
From Bakers Bend, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views: the Balathuduwa, Gommolikanda, and Adarakanda mountain ranges to the left; the southern plains and Samanala and Udawalawe reservoirs to the right; and the Nagrak division and Horton Plains stretching behind in lush greenery. The viewpoint sits approximately 5,000 feet (1,530 m) above sea level, offering a cool climate reminiscent of Nuwara Eliya.
There are two main routes to reach Bakers Bend. From Haputale, travel via Pabahinna for about 500 meters, then continue 6 km past Nanperial Village and Tea Factory. From Balangoda on the Badulla road, take the Nanperial Road via Galagama town and continue 12 km to reach the viewpoint.
