▶️A Common Yet Striking Bird of Sri Lanka
The white-throated kingfisher, also known as the white-breasted kingfisher, is a common species found across Sri Lanka and many parts of Asia. Its distribution stretches from the Middle East to the Philippine Islands, and although it is often seen near water sources, it can also thrive in a wide range of habitats away from rivers and lakes. Its conservation status is currently listed as least concern, showing its healthy population in the wild.

▶️Breeding Season and Family Behavior
The breeding season of the white-throated kingfisher begins with the onset of the monsoon. Usually seen alone or in pairs, this footage beautifully captures a young offspring joining its parents in training. The bird prefers prominent perches such as treetops or distribution wires, from where it releases its sharp and distinctive call.

▶️Hunting Technique and Diet
The white-throated kingfisher hunts from a high vantage point before swooping down to capture its prey. Its diet includes frogs, rodents, earthworms, insects, and fish. If the prey is still alive, the bird repeatedly strikes it against a branch to stun it before swallowing. This powerful hunting method shows its efficiency as a predator in both urban and jungle environments.

▶️Bathing and Daily Behavior
The white-breasted kingfisher is often seen bathing in village streams. It dives into the water several times before coming ashore and perching on a branch to shake itself dry. This behavior not only helps clean its feathers but also regulates its body temperature.

▶️Color, Appearance, and Call
With its large dark red bill, bright red legs, brown head, and vivid turquoise blue wings, the white-throated kingfisher is one of Sri Lanka’s most colorful birds. Its shrill call adds to its unmistakable presence, making it easily recognizable whether in urban settings or deep jungle habitats.
