Question 1

What is Pippali and how is it different from black pepper?

Accepted Answer

Pippali is the dried fruit spike of Piper longum, commonly called long pepper. Unlike round black peppercorns, Pippali has a more complex, slower-building heat with woody and slightly sweet undertones. Both contain piperine, but Pippali's additional alkaloids give it a distinct flavour and a broader range of traditional medicinal uses.

Question 2

What is Pippali used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurveda, Pippali is prized mainly as a digestive stimulant and respiratory tonic. It is one of the three components of Trikatu, a classical formula for improving digestion and nutrient absorption. Practitioners also prescribe it for chronic cough, bronchitis, and as part of rejuvenation regimens, often combined with honey or ghee.

Question 3

Can I buy Pippali in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pippali is available in Ayurvedic pharmacies, herb shops, and from specialist producers across Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet zone districts. Both whole dried spikes and processed preparations such as churna powder or pippalimula phanta are commonly stocked. Quality varies, so look for suppliers with regulatory certification.

Question 4

What is pippalimula and how does it differ from Pippali?

Accepted Answer

Pippalimula refers specifically to the root of the Piper longum plant, as distinct from the fruit spike. While the fruit is used mainly for digestive and respiratory conditions, the root is considered particularly effective for respiratory ailments and joint conditions. It is often prepared as a decoction (phanta) or incorporated into classical compound formulas.

Question 5

How do I make a Pippali tea or decoction at home?

Accepted Answer

Simmer one to two dried Pippali spikes in roughly 400 ml of water over a low heat until the liquid reduces by about half. Strain out the spikes and drink the warm decoction, adding honey if preferred. This preparation is traditionally used as a seasonal remedy for coughs and congestion.

Question 6

Is Pippali safe to take during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Pippali in large or therapeutic doses is generally avoided during pregnancy in Ayurvedic practice due to its potent heating properties. Small culinary amounts are less of a concern, but anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or medical doctor before using Pippali as a supplement.

Question 7

Does Pippali interact with pharmaceutical drugs?

Accepted Answer

Piperine, the main alkaloid in Pippali, has been shown in research to influence the absorption and metabolism of several pharmaceutical compounds, including some antibiotics and immunosuppressants. If you are on prescribed medication, it is advisable to check with your doctor before adding therapeutic doses of Pippali to your routine.
